May 2012

10 children attended the young writers sessions at our school on the 8-9 May. Here are some of the works they produced.
Kapa Haka

Maori voices sing

like the wind rustling

through kereru feathers.

Pois swing in time

with flax skirts

swaying side to side.

The ground shakes

as the boys slap

their thighs like Ruamoko

performing a haka.

The girls’ hands wiri

with the guitar

and the crowd goes wild

when the culture group

exits the stage.

Hunting Season

Three generations of hunters
hid in a broom hut
waiting for sunrise.

Electronic mojos
flap their wings on poles
while wooden decoys
lure Mallards.

Paradise ducks circle
above as spoonbills
fly like lightning.

Shotgun shells
cover the ground
and the twelve- gauge booms
like thunder.

Roasted potato
kumara and parsnip
splattered in duck fat
feed the family
after sunset.

Paint Ball Commando

Army men shout and roar
around Ferrymenad's field.

Commandos fingers rattle
as they pull on the trigger.

Paint balls splatter
like a blood rainbow.

I collapse in the ditch
with camouflaged clothes
covered in mud.

May 2012Here is a young man who has taken it upon himself to be a GREAT team player. He is helping to clean up the school during his lunch and playtime breaks. THANK YOU very much for this. The school really likes what you are doing and can see how well you are doing this.

The children in Room 15 went  to The Aurora Centre for Performing Arts in Burnside to perform in Dancing Like the Stars. After three lessons a week for eight weeks they put on a very polished performance.
